5 Things you can do to support a healthy cycle, increase energy and improve your mood & digestion

Taking control of your health doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking. While I recommend herbs and supplements to support women on their path to wellness, I find that establishing a strong foundation through simple daily practices is essential for improving vitality. These 5 practices don’t require huge investment in time or money—you just need intention.

Drink more water

Water is our body’s main component; we need water to survive. Water helps with digestion and elimination, regulates body temperature and lubricates the body. When we don’t drink enough water our energy is zapped and we become tired. While most of us know this, many aren’t drinking enough water. Though water requirements vary from person to person, women should try to drink a little over 2 liters (9 cups) of water a day. Try and sip frequently over the course of the day.

Sleep better & more

Lack of sleep can lead to myriad issues—weight gain, hormone imbalances, decreased energy, mental fog, stress, anxiety, blood sugar dysregulation, weakened immunity and much more. It’s not just about hours slept but sleep quality. Strive to get 7+ hours of uninterrupted sleep per night (pregnant and postpartum folks are laughing right now! But do the best you can in your current situation).

 Move your body

Physical movement keeps bodies supple, supports digestion & elimination, improves mood, increases energy, promotes better sleep, and more. Aim to get a combination of weight bearing and aerobic exercise throughout your week. If finding time to exercise is an obstacle, start small—take a ten minute walk or try a 15 minute yoga video on YouTube. On the other hand, remember that overexercise can lead to health issues as well.

Breathe with intention

You are breathing all the time but how is the quality of your breath? I find that when I’m stressed I hold my breath and take shallow breaths. Like water, oxygen is essential for life. Making space for deep full breathes can help to calm, reduce stress, increase energy, improve circulation, and clear negativity or unwanted emotions. The beauty of this practice—you can do it anytime and anywhere!

Spend time in nature

Many of us spend most of our days unaware of the daily, lunar and seasonal rhythms of nature. Getting out of synch with these natural rhythms can disrupt sleep, digestion and hormonal balance. Getting outside everyday can help to restore those natural rhythms resulting in better sleep & digestion, reduced stress, improved mood and more! Spending time in nature doesn’t have to be a huge commitment of time—a ten minute walk at a nearby park or sitting in your garden for 15 minutes can have a huge impact.

I find that when I incorporate these practices in my day to day so much space and healing unfolds for me. I’m continuously in awe of what a huge impact these simple habits can have on my health and wellbeing.
